Between work and play most people today would tell you that they do not have the time to sit down and read a good book. They would rather spend that time catching up with friends and family on Facebook or maybe discovering their heritage on Ancestory.com. Some will even go as far as explaining that is this modern world reading is becoming a thing of the past. Why would anyone read when there is a video about it on Youtube?
What most of these people do not realize is that it is this modern technology that is increasing the volume of how much most people read every day. In the past books and magazines were the only real reading material. So to read you had to go buy one or borrow one and then sit down and take the time to read it. For most people this did not happen on a regular basis. People lead busy lives and to take two or three hours to sit in one spot and read just didn’t happen.
This also limited the number of jobs for writers. You had to either write books, or write for a magazine or newspaper in order to earn a living as a writer. With this limited amount of jobs, writers were few and far between. But look at today’s world and you see a much different landscape for the modern writer. You can still write books, but they will end up being read on the internet or an e reader. You can write for a magazine but these are almost all going to an online version in order to cut costs.
In other words if you want to be a writer, there are so many outlets available to you on the internet. Heck you do not even have to work for someone. If you want to create a magazine about cats, for almost no money you can start writing it today. Another benefit to writers as it pertains to the internet is all of those web sites. Think about it all of the writing on those web sites needs to first be written and then rewritten in order to keep people coming back. There is real money to be made writing content for these web sites.
The internet is not destroying the written word; it is causing it to explode. The best part is that most people read more today than they ever did in the past. Whether they are reading for work or for pleasure or to just stay informed, all of these words that they are reading need to be written by someone. If you have learned anything in life you should know that information is power. That means if you are writing you have power and most people like power.
This shift in how we communicate is putting an emphasis back on the basic writing skills we should all possess. It is once again important to understand how to express yourself in words. It is a slow process, but words are becoming more and more important. People are beginning to understand that if they do not want to be left behind; learning to write properly is going to be important. This is forcing schools to come up with better way to teach children to write.
This shift in the focus of education and of how everyone does their job is changing what people do from creating things to creating information. In order to get almost any job today you have to be able to use a computer, meaning you need to be able to read with more and more understanding. This translates into being able to write at a higher level.
As industry evolves from manufacturing to information you will need to become a better writer. Those skills you learned in eighth grade are more and more important. Computers are making our lives easier and the world smaller. You can connect with people all around the world and you can work together from far away. Stepping into tomorrow means being a part of this change, which means you have to possess better writing skills. Technology advances what humans can do, computers have changed what humans need to be able to keep up and that is write.
